Catalysis and Process Integration

Collin Smith and Laura Torrente-Murciano have published an article in Advanced Energy Materials that has been featured on the CEB website. It displays their work on a new process for ammonia production in which synthesis and separation are integrated into a single vessel. As opposed to the conventional Haber-Bosch process where a multi-step high pressure loop is required for ammonia production, they prove the feasibility of an integrated recycle-less process at mild pressures using absorptive separation of ammonia. Such a process is tailored to fit "green ammonia" production from renewable energy because it is more agile and less capital intensive than the conventional process - making it suitable for intermittent and isolated energy sources as opposed to fossil fuels.
